Ameet Mehta’s shooting star will now be the face of every American Center in India

A shooting star designed by Thane resident Ameet Mehta will now be the face of the various chapters of the American Center across the country.
Chosen from more than 1,300 submissions, Mehta’s design emerged as the winner of the nationwide logo design contest announced by the American Center in December 2008. At a ceremony held in New Delhi last month, the 29-year-old was awarded a Motorola phone and a
10-day study tour to the US to meet with top design schools and professionals.
“The American Center was looking for a dynamic brand identity which would represent the strengthening Indo-US relationship. Keeping this in mind, I tried to design a logo that the people working at the centre would be able to relate to. Something to remind them of home,” said Mehta, a 2004 graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology.
A principal designer at Pineapple Consulting, a branding and design consultancy, Mehta said the biggest challenge was trying to fuse India and the US in one symbol. “We submitted four designs catering to different aspects. But the one that won was of a shooting star,” he said. “The trail that the star leaves behind is a fusion of the Indian and the US flag. It is the visual integration of two forces, coming together to make one cohesive unit.”
